Today’s East Village was originally a farm owned by Dutch Governor Wouter van Twiller. Petrus Stuyvesant received the deed to this farm in 1651, and his family held on to the land for over seven generations, until a descendant began selling off parcels of the property in the early 1800s. These blocks became the city’s premier residential district. In the early 1830s, red brick row houses stretched north of Soho between Second Avenue and Washington Square. These row houses were soon joined by the ambitious ecclesiastical institutions of the city.
By the second half of the 19th century, Fifth Avenue had become the premier address of the upwardly mobile. First publishers and then textile firms moved into the area vacated by its wealthy residents and replaced the row houses with practical buildings which are greatly admired to this day.
Speculating devleopers began building multi unit dwellings on lots meant for single family homes and began renting out rooms and apartments to the growing working class. The “East Village” was formerly known as Klein Deutschland (“Little Germany, Manhattan). From the years roughly between the 1850s and the first decade of the 20th century, the “East Village” hosted the largest urban populations of Germans outside of Vienna and Berlin. It was America’s first foreign language neighborhood; hundreds of political, social, sports and recreational clubs were set up during this period, some of these buildings still exist.
Until the mid-1960s, this area was simply the northern part of the Lower East Side, with a similar culture of immigrant, working class life. In the 1950s the migration of “Beatniks” into the neighborhood later attracted hippies, musicians and artists well into 1960s. The area was dubbed the “East Village,” to dissociate it from the image of slums evoked by the Lower East Side.

NYC's East Village: Put on your walking shoes and take your camera

New York City's East Village is a neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan, located east of Greenwich Village, south of Gramercy and Stuyvesant Town, and north of the Lower East Side. The East Village is generally considered by many to be the area east of Broadway and the Bowery to the East River, between 14th Street and Houston Street. It's also one of the most eclectic and picturesque areas of NYC.
Doug Gelbert's A Walking Tour of New York City - East Village is one of a number of similar books by this author, and this small 25-page Kindle edition is a good one for those wanting to get out and see this fascinating, historical and very unique area of Manhattan.
The author gives us a historical overview of this area from its beginnings in the 1600s as a farm owned by the Dutch governor at the time, and touching on his family kept this land for over seven generations, until finally a descendant began selling off pieces of of the property in the early 1800s. Gelbert explains that East Village was formerly known as Klein Deutschland (Little Germany), and from the time roughly between the 1850s and the first decade of the 20th century, the East Village hosted the largest urban populations of Germans outside of Vienna and Berlin.
This area of Manhattan was simply the northern part of the Lower East Side until about the mid-1960s, populated by mostly working class folks. Members of the so-called "Beat Generation" began to move here in the 1950s, and this was followed by musicians, artists and photographers into the late 1960s, along with the inevitable hippies. The area was called the East Village, to dissociate it from the slum images evoked by the Lower East Side at that time.
The author guides us through a true walking tour of this historic and colorful area of Manhattan, providing descriptions of such places as the Puck Building on Lafayette Street and Houston Streets, then moves on to such sights as the Cable Building, the historic Bayard-Condict Building on Bleecker Street and the Appleton Century Croft Building on Bond Street. There are images of most of these, and the descriptions are surprisingly good for a small, 25-page Kindle edition. You'll see fire houses, classic architecture, old churches, jazz clubs, subway stations, libraries, colleges, cemeteries, row houses and residences where the upper middle classes lived in the 1830s.
As an example of what will be found, the original Second Street Deli (now a bank) on the corner of 2nd Avenue and East 10th is here, along with notes about how Holocaust survivor Abe Lebewohl opened the original Second Street Deli in this location in 1954. It became known as the best kosher deli in NYC, famous for its pastrami on rye sandwiches, and the names of many of the stars of the old Yiddish theatre era are embedded in plaques on the sidewalk in front of this location. There are landmarks from when St. Mark's Place was an elegant residential street. On this tour you'll find McSorley's Old Ale House, which is the oldest continuously running bar in New York City. Opened in 1854, this historic bar has served everyone from Boss Tweed and Abe Lincoln to John Lennon, and is doubly interesting in that it remained a mens-only establishment until the 1970s.
Music has quite a history in this area. There's the Five-Spot Jazz Club site on St. Marks Place, and the house where composer George Gershwin lived as a young boy is here. You'll see the the site of Filmore East, which opened in 1968 and went on to host the greatest bands and musicians of that era, including The Doors, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young, and The Who. Don't want to list what the location presently is, as it might spoil the surprise. Some may remember the late CBGB, which got it's name as an acronym for country, bluegrass and blues when it opened in 1974.
Another good one in this series is A Walking Tour of New York City - SoHo, a similar Kindle edition that offers the reader a chance to explore the SoHo area, which gets its name from a blend of "South" and "Houston" from "south of Houston Street." These streets are easily identifiable on any NYC map.
