The Changing tastes of America

History is wonderfully interesting to me, because I learn the why and wherefore of modern day. I understand the problems and the sayings, the mystery and the reason...it all opens up to your insight, as you wander the worlds of the past. I never knew there was a writers project, it is great to know that writers got their start, though such an event. It brought me back to my own experiences as a young girl in the mid 50's traveling to Georgia and then to Florida from Massachusetts.

Frappes where only known in the northeast, ice cream, milk and flavoring mixed up in a drink. It was so difficult for me when I first ordered a frappe in the south, because suddenly it was as though I was not speaking English. I was puzzled? Did I say it so they did not understand my request. I tried again, and I was still puzzled, as where the servers, finally, I got the description of a milk shake and it sounded like what I wanted, so I ordered it, and guess what? It was what I knew as a frappe!

Being from Boston, and being of Italian heritage, I was longing for pasta, pizza and other Italian foods. Where I was going in the South, no one knew where I could find pizza, or spagetti or macaroni, as we called it then. I was in a waste land of Southern food only, and my taste buds were screaming for red sauce and foods I loved. That is the way it was, a trip through this book will give you a trip into the American of the past.
