Funny, insightful, sad and fascinating ... if a little self-indulgent at times!

I really loved this book! I live not too far away from the Sitwell family home at Renishaw but though I had visited the house often, didn't know a great deal about Edith ... other than that she was a renowned eccentric and a rather strange looking woman, especially in later life.
Her childhood in an aristocratic and totally unloving family was an absolute nightmare, the poor child was unwanted, unloved and treated terribly by her parents. She found solace in her extraordinary intelligence and writing talent ... and though I must admit, she does go on an awful lot about her poetry ... the story of her life, the people she knew and the age in which she lived, is beautifully captured and faithfully written in this truly fascinating and moving book.
Her account of a day in her life when in London, being constantly interrupted by telephone calls, visitors, letters, and a collection of life's eccentrics is laugh aloud funny ... then when she writes of her trip to Hollywood and her visiting the 'wrong side of the tracks' - the terrible slums of the 1930s is one of the saddest and most pitiful and powerful pieces of writing I have ever read.
There is humour, humility and great insight and perception here. A truly great mind and an exceptional writer.

Twaddle

This books is mostly twaddle. Sitwell indulges her over-active ego in something that certainly is not an autobiography. These are a series of essays on various topics, mostly very boring. She has one chapter that is a rant about modern vulgarity. Among other things, she thinks pajama parties are vulgar. The chapter is unintentionally rather funny though one does not want to read it in detail. There are a few good British insults here such as the host who tells his guest--"You must visit me again when you have less time." Now that you have read this, you don't need to buy the book.
