A View of the Essential Repetoire if a Bit Dated

This book dates from 1988 and thus it's view of 20th century music is limited. It offers a pretty even view up until 1960 and even then it is pretty conservative. Otherwise it is an excellent beginner or handy reference for the classical music fanatic. It has essays on music which offer insight into individual works and the composers of those works.

Accessible, but not Patronizing Material on Canonical Work

As an arts educator and writer, I am always looking for material to share with the general public on what are often deem "high" forms of art, including orchestral music. So much material is either written strictly for the intelligentsia or comes off like an especially dry obituary for the composer. This book provides a nice, accessible, but not patronizing balance of engaging writing and historical information.

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC

"Listen to the Music," unfortunately out of print now, is by far the best book of its kind I've ever found, full of essential information about much of the classical orchestral repertoire (symphonies, concertos, and tone poems).
There are a few used copies of this book still out there, though, many in very good condition.
The credentials of the author, Jonathan D. Kramer, are extraordinary, and you can find them by Googling him. In some of his reviews it is obvious he has the whole orchestra score in front of him.
It is a "must have" in my library!
