An Excellent Writer and Naturalist

I grew up in the land of the Limberlost. In my teens I was privileged to work as a tour guide at the Limberlost Cabin, Gene Stratton Porter's home in Geneva, IN. My great-grandfather, who was a local school master, had helped Mrs. Porter edit her first published stories, and I grew up with a respect for her and her work. In my teens I read all of her books that I could find, both because of my interest in them and to help me to be more knowledgeable in my work at the Cabin. When I bought this Kindle collection, I had not re-read the books in some years. Reading them again with more knowledge of literature, and especially of literature written during the early years of the 20th century, I was struck by what an excellent writer Gene Stratton Porter really was. The books in this collection cover a wide range of story types, but all are absorbing and well-written. All of them reflect Mrs. Porter's viewpoint as a true naturalist, and have a great emphasis on nature. Moths of the Limberlost is typical of the detailed nature work that she produced in her non-fiction works, but the absence of pictures is a great loss. Her Father's Daughter may be offensive to present-day readers because of its anti-Japanese emphasis, which was typical of its day and helps one to better understand the internment of Japanese-Americans during WWII. The story is well worth reading, however, as are all of the books in the collection.

What a bargain!

As a child, I was enraptured as my father read "Freckles" to me and my brother, a little each night for months. As an English major in college, I sought out and read as many of Gene Stratton Porter's books as I could find. I still search used bookstores for first editions of all her books. What a bargain to find ten of them here for less than $5.00!!! I love the idea of having these treasures 1 click away whenever I have my Kindle in my purse.
