Super Fantastic! **SPOILER ALERT**
By Reading Fanatic
This is the first book in Ms. Brisbin's fantastic KNIGHT'S OF BRITTANY trilogy. Books two and three are; The Mercenary's Bride (my absolute favorite of the 3 books) and His Enemy's Daughter (The Knights of Brittany) (another fantastic read), respectively. The trilogy centers around three knights, born and raised in Brittany, who are all of illegitimate birth. Against all odds, the three rise above their inferior origins to become landed members of the aristocracy. The hero of this book, Giles, and his best friends, Brice and Soren, were trained to be knights by their foster father, a nobleman, who took them in and raised them as his own, along with his own legitimate son. When the call to arms came from Duke William of Normandy, the three men joined the Duke's forces in hopes of finding land, wealth, and a future in England.
Although the trilogy has this common thread that runs throughout, each book can be read as a standalone. As a matter of fact, I started the trilogy by reading book two, after which I read book three, and finally, book one. I absolutely loved every single one of the novels, and can say, without reservation, that it is one of the best trilogies that I have ever read! While it's true that all the books have a similar storyline in that the H is a conquering Norman (actually Breton) who has been awarded the h's family's lands as well as her hand in marriage, and they have to fight off a common enemy in order to secure their claim to the lands and lady, nonetheless, each book is distinct in that each couple has their own unique set of difficulties to overcome. So often, trilogies or book series, merely recycle the same storyline over and over in each book. That is so not the case in this trilogy!!!
In THE CONQUEROR'S LADY, Giles Fitzhenry is the first of the trio to be awarded his lands and title. In order to secure his claim to Fayth's family's lands, Giles is order to marry the lady--if that is at all possible. When Giles arrives at Taerford, he is just in time to prevent his betrothed from marrying another man! Not knowing the identity of his intended's almost groom, Giles gives in to her plea to set the man free--this is a decision that he will come to regret in the future. Fairly quickly, Giles and Fayth marry, although he refuses to consummate the marriage until he is certain she is not with child--a decision that is not easy for him to hold to because of his intense attraction to his wife. Nonetheless, Gile is resolved to this course of action, despite Fayth's assurances that she is still a maid. Fayth, of course, is offended by the fact that Giles refuses to accept her word, and that he believes that she would so easily relinquish her "honor" by lying with a man, not her husband.
Despite their rocky beginning; however, as Fayth and Giles get to know one another, tender feelings begin to develop between them. Giles is a wonderful hero. At the young age of twenty-three, he has already proved himself a fierce warrior and a man of deep loyalty and honor, and has achieved his life's dream. Nevertheless, Giles has a really difficult time overcoming his feelings of inferiority. Despite all his hard work, he still has trouble accepting that he deserves all that he has accomplished; he certainly does not believe that he is good enough for an aristocratic lady such as Fayth. The relationship between the two develops slowly--a nice realistic pace.
Fayth is torn by her divided loyalties between her husband and the Saxon rebels, and before the couple can achieve their HEA she must choose between the two factions. The only complaint I have is that I wish Fayth was a bit more feisty--my personal preference is for plucky heroines, although I realize that not every woman can be spirited and outspoken. It's not that Fayth is a doormat; because she's not, it's just that I felt like she should have challenged Giles more...particularly when it came to sex. She seemed to give in too easily to Giles' sexual advances, especially when you take into consideration Giles' refusal to consummate the marriage, until after he was sure Fayth wasn't carrying another man's child. In that respect, I definitely preferred book two over this one, because the heroine in "Mercenary" is very feisty and gives the H a run for his money!! LOL
That minor complaint aside, I absolutely adored this book! It's beautifully written, with fully developed, three dimensional characters and a dynamic plot! It was a sublime reading experience for me, and I highly recommend, not only this book, but also the other two in the trilogy. The only complaint I have is that there are only three books in the series...I wish there were more for me to read! FYI, this is not a clean romance. There are a few steamy love scenes, which are quite descriptive. Happy reading!

Good start--Poor ending
By kate476
Wanted to like this more then I did. Several reviewers felt that Giles was a bully. I didn't think so. He had a hard job to do and was trying to do it fairly. It didn't help that Fayth his 18 year old wife was a little confused and ditzy. I overlooked a lot of that because she was only 18 and seeing your country taken over by the enemy must be traumatic. But after a while her waffling became tedious. How many times did he have to prove himself? How many times did she betray him. But the clincher for me was I did not like the ending. Not the kiss and make up part. That was expected. It was the dealing with the enemy part that had no credibility and left me with a no way feeling.
SPOILER*****SPOILER******SPOILER*******SPOILER******
I'll try not to make this a true spoiler . The way the villain was handled at the end was ridiculous. No way would he have allowed his enemy to live. A man who still vowed to return with men to defeat William the conqueror. It would have cost Giles everything he and his friends had owned and worked for perhaps even his life. In fact his friends were there and they wouldn't of allowed it. For Giles to do so because he didn't want to upset his wife made him look weak and hen pecked.
What's with Fayth anyway. Her supposed best friend kidnaps her. Has her roughly bound and gagged and thrown over a horse. Tells her he is trading her off to some Welshmen to help form an alliance and doesn't care that she is already married. Or obviously how she will be treated. Threatens her if she tries to get away. But she is still worried about him because he is her best friend. What a ninny. I would have slit his throat at this point and saved Giles the trouble. Giles is right. He keeps telling her she needs to get some girlfriends.

Not as good as her other books
By diamond sales
Terri you're a good writer but I feel this must have been one of your earlier books. There was very little dialogue. If we took out all the explanations and self thoughts I'm sure the book would have been 30 pages. The story had potential but the h was just a little to naive for me. Even at the end of the book I never truly felt the love connection between the H and h. The story of Soren was so much better and well written. It is worth the read. Give this one a pass.
